GOVERNOR PRESENTS ARTS AWARDS The 2008 Governor’s Awards for the Arts were presented by Governor Timothy M. Kaine on September 17 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. The Awards recognize outstanding achievement by artists, arts organizations and supporters of the arts. Further, they call attention to the depth and breadth and diversity of the arts throughout the Commonwealth. There were 345 nominations from across the state, including Fine Arts In Rockbridge. The 10 recipients of the Governor’s Awards were Ralph Stanley, Musician, Coeburn; Ralph Cohen and Jim Warren, Co-Founders American Shakespeare Theatre, Staunton; Theatre IV and Co-Founders Bruce Miller and Phil Whiteway, Richmond; Richmond Ballet and Artistic Director Stoner Winslett; Bob Brown Puppets, Oakton; William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon; Richmond Jazz Society, Richmond; Hampton University Museum; SHENANDOAH: The Washington and Lee University Review, Lexington; David and Susan Goode, Art Patrons, Norfolk The actual Governor;s Award was a beautiful glass sphere created for the occasion by Richmond artist, Kiara Pelissier. Each was an original work of art, hand blown and singed by the artist. All nominees for the Governor’s Award will receive a special certificate recognizing their contributions to the arts in Virginia. Jeannie P. Baliles, former First Lady of Virginia and chair of the 2008 Governor’s Arts Awards said, “The award winners and nominees are wonderfully representative of the creative spirit that abounds throughout our communities and across the Commonwealth.” The Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008 are sponsored by Virginians for the Arts Foundation and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. The program is fully underwritten with private funding from corporate sponsors ExxonMobil Corporation, Dominion Resources, Inc., Norfolk Southern Foundation, PhilipMorrisUSA – An Altria Company and Virginia Natural Gas. No public funds are involved.
