Writers @ Jordan
House features writing workshops, seminars and readings
dedicated to improving the community with a venue to support
and recognize writers and the written word. Past events
include
“Mean Mad Genes: Mental Illness and the Artistic
Temperament”, a reading and panel discussion “Jazz & The
Word”, “Writers and Editors in Conversation”, and “Writers
and Illustrators”. Open Mike nights have invited members of
the community and writers workshop members to read poetry,
fiction or non-fiction.
A poetry contest is part of this
season’s program.
Participating
writers and poets are of regional and national acclaim and
have included Gordan Ball, Adrian Blevins, Carrie Brown,
Patrick Donnelly, Leslie Wheeler, Van Jordan, Katherine
Soniat, and Dabney Stuart, among many others.
Cynthia Atkins received an MFA from Columbia University’s
School of the Arts. Her first full-length Collection,
“Psyche’s Weathers” will be forthcoming from WordTech
in 2007. She has new poems forthcoming in Caketrain,
Chelsea, Good Foot, New York Quarterly, Pearl,
Pilgrimage, Seneca and Seattle Review. She is
currently teaching English and Creative Writing at Roanoke
College. She also works with mixed media assemblage and
one-of-a-kind art furniture.
Martin
Luther KIng Poetry Award
We are
pleased to announce the winners of
the first "Martin Luther
King Poetry Award." The
1st Place Award ($100) is "Peace" by
Julia Brodie who is
a sixth grader at Lylburn Downing,
the 2nd Place Award ($50) is "The
Last March" by Bryce Teague,
a 7th grader from Parry McClure, and
the 3rd Place Award ($25) is "Doves
of Peace" by Caitlan Young,
a 7th grader from Rockbridge Middle
School. Three Honorable mentions
were also given to: Brandy
Wimer (Rockbridge Middle
School, 7th grade), Nicholas
Tolley (Parry McClure, 6th
grade) and Tess Fulcher
(Lylburn Downing, 6th grade). There
were 95 entries of poems written
from middle school students on the
themes of Peace, Equality,
Social Justice, Courage, and
Citizenship.
The
writers read their poems and
received their awards on January 15,
2007 at 7:30 in Lee Chapel on the
Washington and Lee campus, in
preface to the featured reading of
rennowned poet, Sonia Sanchez.
We
are especially grateful to printer

for doing a limited-edition
broadside of the winning poem and to
Melanie Almeder, a
Professor of Literature and Creative
Writing at Roanoke College, for
judging this year..
